Our SkyDive Story ....
As you might already know, skydiving is a very mentally challenging decision to make, however, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane at a height of almost 3 miles above the ground, strapped to someone you just met, may be the most exhilarating thing you have ever done in your life.
Why skydiving? Barry Sopinsky, Founder & CEO of Challenge2ConquerALS has been putting on challenging events like cycling and stair climbs for over 10 years now to raise funds and awareness for ALS, a deadly devastating disease. Barry's Dad died of ALS when he was only 13.
Over 55 years later, Barry found out a high school friend and football teammate, Bob Amann had been diagnosed with ALS. He also found out Bob was an avid skydiver. Barry, who had done 4 tandem jumps before, told Bob,"I'll jump out of an airplane with you to support ALS", thence the beginning of Barry's next challenging event to raise funds and awareness for ALS, a SkyDive.
We are very sad to inform everyone that Bob Amann, the EAGLE, as he was called, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2021 with his family by his side. The upcoming 7/11 Skydive, part of the 2021 OHIO 2-Day Charity Event will be in memory of Bob. Bob's family will be joining us to remember the legacy of the EAGLE so it may live on year after year.
Why come to Ohio? Well in 2019, Barry became acquainted with another ALS Warrior, William White. William, an OSU alumni football player and 11 year veteran of the NFL and Barry became friends after Barry invited William as his guest to the 2019 DEATH RIDE Tour Cycle2ConquerALS event in Colorado. Barry has been putting on this challenging 3-day bicycle ride covering 235 miles over 5 mountain passes in Southwestern Colorado for 10 years now and has raised just shy of $300,000 to support ALS Research and Awareness.
Early 2020, William found out about Barry's desire to support his friend Bob Amann and a skydive, William was right in on that. Because of Covid in 2020, the Inaugural SkyDive2ConquerALS scheduled in Florida, where Bob lived, needed to be cancelled.
The event was rescheduled for August in Moab, UT. Why Moab? Barry and his wife Deborah, would go to Moab in the Spring and Fall to ride the Skinny Tire Festival and they just loved the beauty of this place. Barry thought, no better place to jump out of a perfectly good airplane than over beautiful Arches & Canyonlands National Parks. So now the first SkyDive2ConquerALS was going to take place. Barry set August 22, 2020 for the event. The event would be in honor of The EAGLE, Bob Amann.
Barry invited William to join him. After that first dive, William was hooked. So it was Barry and William for the first SkyDive2ConquerALS. Out of nowhere, an associate of William's, Yyonne Jackson, found out about the dive on Facebook and decided she wanted to support William and dive with him. So the 3 of them headed off to Moab. William asked Barry to bring this event to Ohio and the rest is history.

In late 2020, Barry starting working with OSU Wexner Medical Center and Dr. Stephen J. Kolb who leads the ALS/MND Multidisciplinary Clinic & Research Program to plan a SkyDive2ConquerALS and a Cycle2ConquerALS Charity Event. Challenge2ConquerALS Inc has now become a Community Partner of the Wexner Medical Center and proud to be working with such a prestigious university and a talented, committed research (Physician-Scientist) like Stephen J. Kolb.
Dr. Kolb has committed to jump out of a perfectly good airplane for the first time ever to show is support for his patients and all the ALS Warriors past and present.
